Our time together will begin with the Church’s mission: to proclaim and manifest, as Jesus did, the reign of God. We ask what model of Church is required for the mission. What does the reign of God look like?

Paul Lakeland will present the keynote address: The Call of the Baptized: Be the Church, Live the Mission.
Dr. Lakeland holds the chair of the Aloysius P. Kelley, SJ Professor of Catholic Studies and is the director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT.
He is author of The Liberation of the Laity (2004) and Catholicism at the Crossroads (2007). His latest book, Church: Living Communion (2009) has been described as “seizing the moment of a church on the brink of change and pointing the direction forward”, and as “building a practical strategy for moving beyond survival to revival.”

We ask what practices can create the cultural model that will fulfill the mission?
About seventy local Catholics have been preparing in work/study groups since April, 2009. They will present their recommendations for best practices that will bring our local church culture more in line with the gospel message of love. You are invited to join in the discussion of these recommendations with the following work/study groups.
– Bishop Selection
– Catholic/Christian Identity
– Catholic Spirituality
– Church as a Community of Equals
– Church Authority and Governance
– Emerging Church
– Faith Formation of Children and Youth
– Mandatory Celibacy/Clericalism
– Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
– Social Justice
Each of these groups address disconnects discerned between church practices and the Gospel message of justice and love, and will make recommendations for reform. Cultural Change How can we spread the word about these recommendations in our local community after Synod 2010? You are invited to join the Action Coordinating Team (ACT) to get the conversation started in your family and parish, to listen to your conscience, and to speak your truth.
Each work/study group will present its recommendations in a 2 hour break-out session in the afternoon. Because there is limited space in some break-out rooms, you will be asked on the registration form to indicate your first three choices to attend one of these presentations. First registered will receive first choices, but we will try to accommodate everyone.
